wanda phuuka and the potholes

Lessons learned on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail:
-backpacks aren't really waterproof.
-waterproof everything, not just your food bag, especially if you're trying to fit three people in a two person, which means leaving your bags outside overnight.
-if you're going to bring a digital camera, put it in a ziplock bag and bring it into the tent at night.
-only bring books you're not worried about getting wrecked.
-one set of wet clothes, one set of dry clothes; thermal shirts and fleece pants are wonderful. a set of dry clothes in the car would be nice too.
-your shoes and pants will get muddy.
-purified water doesn't taste that bad, and rehydrated campfood is quite delicious.
-GORP (i.e. trail mix) is infinitely satisfying.

On the happy side of things, we saw waterfalls, creeks, cliffs, ocean waves, a variety of slugs, otters, seals, birds, eagles, snakes, starfish, all kinds of marine life (anemone!) and strange rock formations on Botannical Beach, a real live rainforest, and no bears or cougars. There are signs warning of occasional "rogue waves," but we didn't see any of those either. My favourite part was crossing the suspension bridges.
